As a team of professional organizers, one of the most common challenges we see in family homes is toy clutter. From blocks and dolls to puzzles and playsets, toys have a way of multiplying and taking over living spaces. While toys are essential for child development and imagination, too many can lead to overwhelm, for both kids and parents. The good news? A decluttered toy space doesn’t mean less fun, it often means more meaningful play. Here’s how to simplify the toy situation and create a more peaceful home.
Start with a Clean Slate – Begin by taking everything out of the playroom, toy bins, or wherever toys live in your home. Seeing the full volume of toys can be eye-opening. Lay everything out so you can assess what’s being used, what’s broken, and what your child has outgrown.
Sort and Purge – Categorize toys into clear groups: building sets, pretend play, dolls, vehicles, puzzles, etc. This makes it easier to identify duplicates. Involve your children in this process when appropriate, usually around age 5 is a great time to start! Ask questions like, “Do you still enjoy playing with this?” or “Would another child love this more right now?” Let kids choose a few items to donate. It can empower them and teach valuable lessons about gratitude and generosity.
Keep What Sparks Joy (and Creativity) – Aim to keep toys that are open-ended and encourage imagination. Building blocks, art supplies, dress-up clothes, and books often outlast noisy, battery-operated gadgets in terms of engagement. Less really can be more. When kids aren’t overwhelmed by choices, they tend to play longer and more creatively with what’s available.
Create Zones – Once you’ve narrowed down the collection, organize toys by category and designate “homes” for each. Clear bins with labels or pictures are great for kids who can’t read yet. Check out this reel of our favorite labels for the playroom from Etsy! Try to keep toys at kid level so children can access and put things away independently. Use shelves, baskets, and containers with lids only for items that truly need them. If you have a smaller space, consider rotating toys. Store some items out of sight and bring them out periodically. This makes old toys feel new again and keeps the play area fresh without adding clutter.
Sustain – Tidy up together daily, even if just for five minutes. Make it a fun routine! Play a favorite song and challenge your kids to beat the clock. Schedule regular decluttering sessions (every season or after birthdays/holidays) to keep things manageable.
